Product Testing, Requirements, and Approvals
There are regions in the country that are considered Wind Borne Debris Regions (WBDR) and High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ). These regions have building codes that ensure properties are built with higher safety measures and Florida is one of those regions.
The Florida building code designates as Wind Borne Debris Regions (WBDR) any area that is within one mile of the coastal mean high water line where the wind speed is 110 mph or greater and any hurricane-prone area where the wind speed is 120 mph or greater.
Many people wonder if their windows and doors are impact glass resistant to hurricane.
V&V Windows designs and tests its products (hurricane windows & doors), so they meet the Florida building code requirements for impact-rated doors and windows.
The Missile Tests (needed to meet impact requirements)
Large Missile Testing: This test is required for products that are going to be used in structures that are up to 30 feet high. During testing a 2” x 4” wood stud weighing 9 lbs is shot from a cannon into the door at 34 mph. The product receives 2 impacts, one at the center and another 6 inches from one corner. The Miami-Dade County product testing criteria for a large missile failure is a rupture in the product of more than 1/16″ by 5″.
Small Missile Testing: This test is required for products that are going to be used in structures that are over 30 feet high. During testing 10 steel balls are shot from a cannon into the door at 89 mph. The product receives 3 impacts, impact areas are the same as those of the large missile testing. The Miami-Dade County product testing criteria for a small missile failure is is the small missile goes through.
The Cyclical Tests (needed to meet pressure requirements)
The product undergoes 4,500 positive cycles in a pressure chamber and then 4,500 negative cycles in a pressure chamber. Note that the stronger the products are able to withstand higher pressure and therefore have higher wind resistance.
